It’s that time of year again. Fall has made its presence known with the leaves changing colors. Sweaters are making an appearance in our weekly attire. And those football Sundays we’ve been yearning for are back in business.
At theBLOQparq (tBp), we believe valuable lessons can be gained from anything and everything in life, including football. So the next time you’re screaming at the TV, wondering why your team ran the ball instead of passing, take a moment to think about these valuable insights while watching the game. Everyone loves rooting for the underdog. There’s a reason people get tired of seeing the same team win over and over again. It’s boring; it’s predictable. And it most definitely doesn’t excite or inspire.
Human nature is to cheer for the lesser opponent, hoping they manage to pull off an upset. The narrative in which someone puts in the extra work and effort to achieve the impossible is a story we all love to witness.
Why? Because we envision ourselves as the main character, willing ourselves to victory. If you find yourself in a situation where the odds are stacked against you, use it to fuel your motivation, and take comfort in knowing there are crowds of people cheering you on.
The game after a big loss matters the most. You can’t win all the time. There will be days where the other team outplays you, or things don’t go your way. It’s not so much the losing that defines you, but the way you react to it. A champion is someone who learns from their mistakes but doesn’t wallow in them. They remain focused as necessary adjustments are made.
Whether it’s on or off the field, make a conscious effort to avoid beating yourself up for the things you did wrong. Instead, view those errors as an invitation for improvement. Hone in on the skill sets you already possess and take them to the next level, leaving the competition feeling like they never had a chance. Get to the end zone one first-down at a time.
Strategy always comes into play. Being aware of your current position and where you’re aiming to go next is crucial. Every decision you make impacts your next move. Whether you decide to run or pass, go for it on fourth down or take the field goal, play calling is an art form that must be refined. Knowing when to take a risk or going the safe route comes down to a disciplined balance of the head and the heart. It’s true in life, as well. You need to have the ability to create short and long-term goals to win the “game.”
There will always be defenders to get past. When it comes to scoring a touchdown, you will never have a clear path. There will always be another person ready to chase you down and make the tackle. In response, it’s your job to make a move and find a way to get those extra yards. You can’t allow the fear of getting knocked down, stop you from pushing forward.
“Positive thinking is the key to success in business, education, pro football, anything that you can mention. I go out there thinking that I’m going to complete every pass.”
– Ron Jaworski, former NFL quarterback
Whatever your desired destination may be – the end zone or business ownership – you can expect there will be obstacles to overcome. It comes with the territory. But it’s also what makes reaching your goal that much sweeter.
Put in the hard work and the passion to match it. You can always tell the difference between the players who are in it strictly for the paycheck and the ones who play for the love of the sport. Putting in the hours at practice and in the gym is necessary, but it’s not everything. The passion is what’s going to push and motivate you; this is true in every aspect of life. Whether you’re working for a company or starting one of your own, it is critical that you believe in what you do and genuinely enjoy it.
Loyalty, teamwork, and being a part of something greater. We’re not just talking about football anymore – we’re talking about tBp.
